What is Sandwich 1NT?

Sandwich 1NT is a competitive convention used after the opponents have opened and responded in different suits, with partner passing in between. A 1NT call in the sandwich position is artificial, usually showing the two unbid suits.

The bidder is "sandwiched" between two opponents who have both shown suits. A natural notrump overcall in this position is possible by agreement, but many pairs prefer using 1NT to show shape. The cost is small: a strong natural 1NT is rare once both opponents have bid and partner has passed. Because the call is artificial, it may require an alert; check the governing regulations.

The classic sandwich position

  • If Sandwich 1NT is on, 1NT shows the two unbid suits: diamonds and spades.
  • It is not a natural balanced notrump overcall.

Shape and strength

Sandwich 1NT is shape-first. The common treatment expects at least 5-5 in the unbid suits, though some partnerships explicitly allow 5-4 with favorable vulnerability or passed-hand status.

A typical weak range is about 5-10 HCP, with limited defense and a willingness to play at the two level opposite a fit. Stronger hands usually start with double, which implies more strength and less shape, or with 2NT, which shows the same two suits with better values. Vulnerability still matters: a poor vulnerable 5-5 can be expensive even when its point count fits the range.

1NT
  • The 1NT bidder passed originally, so many styles treat this as two-suited rather than natural.
  • Many pairs allow 5-4 shape by a passed hand because game is no longer a serious ambition.

Too balanced

  • This hand does not have the shape for a two-suited action.
  • A natural defensive method or pass is more sensible depending on agreement.

Passed-hand 5-4

  • With 7 HCP this hand passed in first seat, so after 1-P-1 a light two-suited 1NT carries little risk of missing game.
  • Pairs who allow 5-4 by a passed hand can compete here where a takeout double would overstate the values.

Advancer choices

Advancer usually picks one of the two unbid suits at the cheapest level. A jump in either suit is preemptive and non-forcing, based on a fit, while a cuebid of an opponent's suit is the common forcing route with genuine game interest: a rare hand opposite a limited two-suiter.

Advancer only has to act when the next hand passes. If the opening side bids again, advancer is free to pass without a fit. The opening side has already shown values and at least two suits, so strain accuracy matters more than point counting alone.

Sandwich 1NT versus Raptor

Both Sandwich 1NT and Raptor use 1NT artificially, but in different seats. Raptor is a direct overcall after one opponent opens. Sandwich 1NT occurs after both opponents have bid.

The conventions can coexist if the partnership carefully defines seat and auction triggers.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting that 1NT is artificial in sandwich position.
  • Using Sandwich 1NT without enough shape.
  • Failing to define whether a passed hand can be lighter.
  • Confusing Sandwich 1NT with Raptor or a natural 1NT overcall.

FAQ

What does Sandwich 1NT show?

It usually shows the two unbid suits after the opponents have opened and responded in different suits.

Is Sandwich 1NT natural?

Not when the convention is on. It is artificial and shape-showing.

How is Sandwich 1NT different from Unusual 2NT?

Both show two-suited hands, but Sandwich 1NT is the weaker action at the one level. In the same sandwich auction, 2NT shows the same two suits with better values and a willingness to play at the three level.
