What is Multi Two Diamonds?

Multi Two Diamonds is an artificial 2 opening. In the most common version it shows a weak two opening in either hearts or spades, while keeping the exact suit hidden for one round.

Some partnerships add strong balanced hands, strong diamond hands, or other rare hand types. For practical play and defense, the first assumption should usually be that opener has a weak six-card major.

The core auction

  • 2 is artificial and usually shows a weak major.
  • 2 is often pass-or-correct: opener passes with hearts and bids 2 with spades.

Opening requirements

The weak version is normally a hand that would have opened a natural weak two in a major. The exact strength and suit quality depend on vulnerability and partnership style.

  • Usually a six-card major.
  • Typically below opening strength.
  • Vulnerability changes how disciplined the opening should be.
  • Side four-card majors or strong hand variants must be discussed explicitly.

Responses

Responder usually chooses between stopping low, inviting game, preempting, or asking opener to describe the hand. The exact response structure is essential because responder does not yet know opener's major.

The structure below is a common treatment for a weak-major-only Multi. Partnerships that include strong options must assign separate rebids for those hands.

  • 2: pass-or-correct; opener passes with hearts and bids 2 with spades.
  • 2: commonly pass-or-correct with invitational overtones; opener passes with spades, while with hearts opener bids 3 with a minimum and 4 with a maximum.
  • 2NT: a forcing inquiry asking opener to show the major and minimum or maximum strength.
  • 3 and 3: higher pass-or-correct or preemptive actions whose exact level implications must be agreed.
  • 3NT: usually natural and to play.
  • 4: in the base treatment, opener bids the suit below the weak major, 4 with hearts or 4 with spades, so responder can complete the transfer and become declarer.
  • 4: in the base treatment, opener bids the weak major at the four level and becomes declarer.
  • Some partnerships invert these calls or use a different right-siding scheme, so the mapping must be agreed.

Responder invites with 2

  • Twelve HCP with four hearts: game is possible opposite the heart weak two, so 2 invites opener to bid 4 with a maximum; opposite spades, 2 is already the intended contract.
  • In the common treatment opener passes 2 with spades and bids 3 or 4 with hearts.

Defense

The defense needs to handle two problems at once: the opponents have taken away space, and opener's major is still unknown. A complete agreement is more useful than a collection of overlapping calls.

One coherent option is an overlap-free Dixon-style ranged defense. Immediate double shows a 12-16 HCP balanced hand, an unbalanced 20-count, or any hand with 21 or more HCP. A direct 2NT shows 17-20 HCP balanced. A balanced 20-count therefore bids 2NT, while an unbalanced 20-count starts with double and clarifies on the next round. Suit overcalls are natural; a three-level suit normally shows 12-16 HCP and a good six-card suit.

  • Double: 12-16 HCP balanced, an unbalanced 20-count, or any hand with 21 or more HCP.
  • 2NT: 17-20 HCP balanced, including every balanced 20-count.
  • Two- and three-level suit overcalls: natural; a three-level call normally shows a good six-card suit and 12-16 HCP.
  • After double, 2NT by advancer can be played as Lebensohl.
  • After 2 - pass - 2 - pass - pass, double is takeout of hearts and other calls are natural.

When to play it

Multi 2 is attractive when preemptive pressure matters and the partnership is comfortable with artificial continuations. It is less attractive for partnerships that need simple, low-memory agreements.

After 2 - pass - 2, what is opener normally expected to do with a weak spade hand?

Version control and regulations

Multi 2 is not one fixed convention. One partnership may play only a weak major version, another may include strong balanced hands, and another may add strong diamond variants. Adding more hand types requires more forcing relays and signoff rules for responder.

Because the opening is artificial and preemptive, event regulations matter. Treat legal status, alerting, and written defenses as part of the convention rather than an afterthought.

  • Write the included strong options down, or play none.
  • Keep the first response structure centered on pass-or-correct decisions.
  • Agree whether the pass-or-correct structure still applies after opponents double or overcall 2.
  • Prepare the written defense some events require, and agree a simple defense against opponents who play Multi.

More Multi response examples

Responder first decides whether to stop low, invite, preempt, or ask. Pass-or-correct bids are the heart of the common weak-major version.

2NT
  • 2NT is commonly an artificial asking bid.

2NT
  • In versions that include a strong balanced hand, opener rebids 2NT over the pass-or-correct response to show it.
  • Follow-ups then mirror the partnership structure over a 2NT opening, by agreement.

Defense examples

Defending Multi is awkward because opener's suit is unknown. A simple defense should say what immediate double means, what natural overcalls promise, and how to act after pass-or-correct auctions.

Immediate double

  • In the Dixon-style ranged defense taught here, double shows 12-16 HCP balanced, an unbalanced 20-count, or any hand with 21 or more HCP.
  • The strong doubler clarifies with a natural rebid on the next round; a balanced 20-count bids 2NT instead.

  • The auction suggests opener has hearts if 2 is passed.
  • Balancing agreements can now be closer to defending a natural weak two in hearts.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting whether 2 is pass-or-correct or natural.
  • Adding strong variants without discussing the follow-up structure.
  • Defending without an agreement for double and 2NT.
  • Opening undisciplined weak hands at unfavorable vulnerability.

FAQ

Is Multi Two Diamonds legal in every bridge event?

No. Some events restrict artificial preempts. The convention chart or local regulations must be checked before using Multi 2.

Does Multi 2 always show a weak major?

Not always, but the weak-major meaning is the most common practical case. Strong variants are partnership-specific.

What is the first defensive agreement to make?

Agree the meaning of double over 2. Without that, both players are guessing in the most common competitive position.
